One hundred thirty-four years is a long time to perfect the art of youth development. Formal metrics confirm what anecdotal reports have always shown us: building strong social and emotional foundations sets children up for true long-term success.

LEARN MORE ABOUT TRAIL BLAZERS AT MORNINGSIDE PARK

Every Trail Blazers program is designed with the same five building blocks – research-backed strategies, seamlessly woven into each day’s plan:

  • GOAL SETTING: deciding upon daily, aspirational group and individual goals and planning paths towards them

  • TEAM BUILDING and CHALLENGE: working together to solve problems and encouraging each other to persist when things get tough

  • FREE PLAY and EXPLORATION: letting wonder and imagination guide the program experience

  • SCIENCE and SKILL BUILDING: honing in on specific interests and developing a methodical approach to learning

  • REFLECTION: reflecting on one’s performance, focusing on the day’s highs and lows, and getting excited about what tomorrow will bring

This approach – which looks different every day, within every program, and for every group – delivers a uniquely powerful youth development experience.

The Junior Naturalist Program

Join renowned naturalist, Ken Chaya, to discover the wonders of nature in Morningside Park. At last the leaves will be reaching their peak in Autumn color! Late October usually signals the brilliant yellows, deep oranges and fiery reds of Fall. We will observe different trees and discuss what changes are happening in their annual life cycle. We will compare leaf colors and textures from separate trees and learn about the differences between native and non-native species. We will also seek out Birds and Insects that can be found at this time of year.

Children must be accompanied by an adult, be prepared to walk, and wear closed-toe shoes. Binoculars are recommended but not required. There are no rain dates. Only in the case of heavy rain or thunderstorms will the event be rescheduled.

This program is underwritten by The Morningside Park Conservancy. Tickets are Free but we ask you to register so we are adequately staffed. We look forward to seeing you in the Park!

The Junior Naturalist Program

Join renowned naturalist, Ken Chaya, to discover the wonders of nature in Morningside Park. We will continue to look for migrant Songbirds and Raptors such as Hawks, Vultures and Falcons in the skies overhead. We will listen for the sound of Songbirds calling and Woodpeckers drilling for sap and insects. We will observe the late-blooming flowers such as Asters and Goldenrod and also look for fall fruit such as Acorns, Apples, and Berries. You will learn about the importance of native plants and diversity in a heathy urban ecosystem. Perhaps some Turtles will still be sunning themselves and if we are lucky, a Heron or Egret may be joining them at the water’s edge. And we will keep a lookout for leaves turning color.

Children must be accompanied by an adult, be prepared to walk, and wear closed-toe shoes. Binoculars are recommended but not required. There are no rain dates. Only in the case of heavy rain or thunderstorms will the event be rescheduled.

The Junior Naturalist Program

Join renowned naturalist, Ken Chaya, to discover the wonders of nature in Morningside Park. As October arrives, migration continues in the skies above us. Songbirds are still passing through and feeding and resting in our parks and green spaces. Larger birds such as Hawks join them in their passage South. We will scan the skies for migrant species of Hawks as well as check the usual perches for our neighborhood Red-tail Hawk pair that successfully nested on the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. We will also look for Turtles along the shoreline to see if they are still sunning themselves before the Winter drives them down to the bottom of the pond. A variety of late-blooming flowers are still attracting insects and we will what kinds of Butterflies, Bees, and Flies can be seen drinking nectar.

Children must be accompanied by an adult, be prepared to walk, and wear closed-toe shoes. Binoculars are recommended but not required. There are no rain dates. Only in the case of heavy rain or thunderstorms will the event be rescheduled.
